Peyronie's disease (curved penis)
The occurrence of Peyronie's disease varies between 0.4% and 7% among men, according to studies.
The condition can affect both erection and sexual function, and there is no standardised first-line treatment. A wait-and-see strategy is often chosen, with a risk that surgery becomes necessary later. At Behandlerverket Ski we want to offer an active, regenerative alternative that can reduce both pain and plaque formation.
Focused shockwave – precision and effect
We use focused shockwave therapy, which directs the energy at a very limited area of just 5×5 mm for maximum effect on the tissue in question. To ensure accurate treatment, ultrasound scanning is always used before and during the treatment. This means we can hit the plaque precisely, stimulate regeneration and reduce the risk of damage to surrounding tissue.
The benefits of shockwave treatment for Peyronie's disease include:
- Reduction of plaque size
- Less pain on erection
- Reduction of penile curvature
- Improved erectile function (measured with IIEF-5)
The treatment is safe, without documented complications, and can be combined with laser treatment for increased effect. Studies show that up to 75% experience pain-free erections 3 months after the end of treatment with a combination of shockwaves and laser.
A holistic course of treatment
The course of treatment always starts with a thorough examination to map the plaque, pain and expected treatment need. A typical course consists of:
- Shockwave therapy once a week, usually 8–12/15 treatments
- Laser treatment as part of the whole course
- Home exercises such as penile traction therapy (PTT), up to 30 minutes daily
- Evaluation of effect at the earliest after 6 months
Peyronie's disease is challenging to treat, and there are no quick fixes. Even so, early, targeted intervention can have a positive effect on plaque, pain and erection, while giving the patient a more active role in the treatment.
