Shoulder pain

Did you know that the shoulder consists of no fewer than four joints? Each of the structures in the shoulder can be subject to inflammation or injury, but it is most often a cumulative load or an injury that is the reason you experience pain in the shoulder.

About shoulder pain

The shoulder complex is complicated and consists of four shoulder joints. The shoulder blade forms a joint with the chest wall, and the collarbone forms the connection from the breastbone to the shoulder blade. The upper arm bone forms a joint with the shoulder blade and is the ball-and-socket joint most people know as the shoulder joint itself. In addition, there are supporting muscles that help with all movements, ligaments that stabilise, and nerves from the neck that run through the shoulder. All these structures can be the cause of shoulder pain.

Shoulder pain can be divided into acute and load-related injuries/conditions. With acute injuries you often experience sudden-onset pain, which typically occurs when you break a fall, or from a direct blow to the shoulder. Load-related complaints increase in intensity over time and can be due to overload at the workplace, or other repetitive physical activity or hobby. A static and one-sided working posture can be a cause. With load-related conditions it is common not to remember a triggering cause or understand why the complaints have arisen.

  • Pain on movement. Above shoulder height or to the side are the most common.
  • Reduced daily function
  • Pain at rest
  • Pain that radiates further down the arm or up into the neck

At Behandlerverket we examine and treat the following shoulder diagnoses:

  • Tendon conditions (tendon inflammation/tendinopathy)
  • Muscle/tendon tear
  • Subacromial pain syndrome (impingement)
  • Osteoarthritis in the shoulder
  • Labral injury (SLAP lesion)
  • Muscle pain / shoulder myalgia
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Thrower's shoulder
  • Treatment and follow-up after fractures of shoulder structures or after surgery

A thorough history and clinical examination are important when you come to us at Behandlerverket so that we can find out which treatment you are most likely to respond best to. Diagnostic ultrasound will often be an effective supplement for reaching the right diagnosis when it comes to shoulder conditions. The sooner we reach the right diagnosis, the sooner you improve. When needed, our practitioners can refer for other imaging.

The treatment plan you receive from us aims to reduce pain and normalise mobility as quickly as possible, so that you can return to the activities you usually want to do, and preferably a little stronger and more active than before.

Some of the treatments we use for shoulder conditions:

  • mobilisation/manipulation of nearby joints and the shoulder blade
  • muscular treatment of the supporting muscles
  • shockwave therapy for tendon conditions/tendon inflammation
  • exercise therapy for mobility and strength

We know that both active and passive treatment may be needed. After all, our concept is based on easy access to treatment and exercise.
